Ireland is situated in the extreme north-west of Europe. Dublin, with
a population of 953, 000 is the capital city. The Irish language is the
first official language of the country and the English language is recognised
as the second official language.
Ireland has a rich and varied cultural heritage, especially in literature.
Irish writers have made a notable contribution to 20th century writing
in the English Language. Celebrated Irish authors include Wilde and Joyce,
as well as Nobel Laureates G B Shaw, W B Yeats, Samuel Beckett and Seamus
Heaney. Indeed Yeats found inspiration for much of his poetry in Indian
mythology and dance and was a friend of fellow Nobel Laureate Rabrindranath
Tagore.
For many Indians, their first contact with Ireland was as a result
of being taught by Irish teachers at school. Irish missionaries first
came to India in the early 19th century. Ireland's history as a part of
the British Empire ties the country closely to India.
The Irish Nationalist Movement had close links with its Indian counterpart. The authors of the Indian Constitution drew on Ireland's example when drawing up a constitution for an independent India.
In the economic field, Ireland and India share the distinction of being two of the largest exporters of software in the world. Roughly one third of the total amount of American investment in electronics is concentrated in Ireland. The Irish Government, with its EU partners, is encouraging IT companies to develop connections with India, whether through sales, joint ventures, the recruitment of personnel or outward investment by Indian companies.
Ireland is well represented in India. Along with the Embassy in New Delhi and an Honorary Consulate General in Mumbai, in 2000, Ireland became the first country to appoint an Honorary Consul in Bangalore.
